United Nations Summer Global Youth Leadership Academy——“Developing young talents and nurturing a new generation of global leaders”

From August 5th to 24th, 2019, 10 student representatives from ICARE participated in the Summer Global Youth Leadership Academy (GYLA) organized by the International Training Centre of International Labour Organization (ITCILO) under the leadership of ICARE Education center director Ms. Liu Yang. The theme of the training is "Developing young talents and nurturing a new generation of global leaders."

 

 

On August 5th, the project officially opened. The opening ceremony was hosted by Dr. Zu Liangrong, Senior Project Officer of ITCILO. The meeting was attended by Mr. Moussa Oumarou, Deputy Director General of ILO, Mr. Liu Yanguo, Director of ITCILO Center, Mr. Giuseppe Casale, Deputy Director, Mr. Andreas Klemmer, Director of ITCILO Training Department. Ms. Yordanka Tzvetkova, Director of the BRICS Project, and teachers and student representatives from 17 universities including Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Tianjin University and Northwestern Polytechnical University.

 

During the three weeks of training, students participated in a wealth of courses on the ITCILO campus. GYLA has a variety of learning styles, and the course focuses on developing 3Q for students. In the morning, Keynote Speech & master classes and panel discussion models were provided to learn relevant theoretical knowledge. In the afternoon, there are diverse break-out sessions. Students were divided into different groups to learn according to their professional interests.  Through some practical cases, students can combine theory and practice, and take face-to-face communication with UN officials and students from different universities.

 

The first week of the course was designed to introduce the basics of international organizations and develop IQ for students. The morning keynote speech was organized by UN officials around SDGs, developing youth talents and raising youth leadership. The afternoon course was specifically about the law, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), gender equality and other aspects of expertise.

 

In the second week, the students started a four-day trip to Geneva. During the trip, members of the association visited international organizations and institutions such as the International Labor Organization, the United Nations Office at Geneva and the World Health Organization.

 

On August 19th 2019, students entered the third week (8.19-8.21) . The morning course consisted project management, cross-cultural communication, and leadership EQ training. The afternoon courses were centered around 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), Decent work, Green Economy and Green Jobs, which are aimed at cultivating students to improve their EQ and CQ.

 

 

On the afternoon of 23rd, GYLA project had closing ceremony. Dr. Zu Liangrong and Director of the Turin Training Center, Mr. Liu Yanguo, Deputy Director Giuseppe Casaley and BRICS ProjectDirectorManager Yordanka Tzvetkova attended the closing ceremony. ICARE student JIANG Congcong  has performed well in all aspects of the project and won the outstanding camper.

 

 

In the three weeks of training and study, our students benefited a lot. Not only had a personal experience of international organizations, but also the opportunities and information on employment of UN agencies, such as career development in the United Nations, internship application JPO projects, etc., and know that the ambitious goals of achieving world peace, social progress, and economic development need the efforts of every young person. Everyone has fully felt that the United Nations is closely related to our lives, and that the United Nations has made contributions to the development of the world and is full of expectations for its future.

 

 

China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, as the first important cooperation project of Chinese and European governments in the field of engineering education cooperation, it actively serves the major national strategies and actively explores new ways of talent development in the field of clean and renewable energy. In 2018, the Student Global Governance and Sustainable Development Association was established. In the winter of 2018, the association visited the United Nations International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO). The visit has laid a good foundation for the wider and deeper cooperation between our institute and ITC.
