ICARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ATTENDED THE INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON ACCELERATING CARBON NEUTRALITY IN THE YANGTZE RIVER DELTA REGION IN SHANGHAI

During the Climate Change 21st Conference, world leaders made commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement to combat Climate Change.China also announced its new Climate Pledges to cut emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, which indicate China’s devotion to intensify its Climate actions with the world. Given that the Yangtze river Delta is one of the economic engines of China, it has great potential to lead and advance China’s new pledges. With such inspiration, the World Resources Institute (WRI) holds an “International Forum on Accelerating Carbon Neutrality in the Yangtze River Delta Region” on June 10th, 2021 in Shanghai brought together Nordic countries and the Yangtze River Delta region to learn from each other. Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland form the Nordic countries and are pioneers in building China’s low-carbon development.

Our very own International Graduate Student Melvina Fudia Kamara was in attendance alongside 300 participants both online and offline representatives from governments, enterprises, academic institutions and international organizations grace the event.

 

Different speakers from various sectors gave their contributions as the session was entirely based on shared of experiences and case scenarios in green economy development.The opening remarks was cited by Li Fang, Country Director of World Resources Institute China, in her statement she stated that “We should focus on global decomposition, strengthen the top-level design, guide and urge local and key players, industries and enterprises to set goals and formulate action plans scientifically. At the same time, we should strengthen international exchanges and co-operation, seek denominator for global climate governance, and work with the international community to protect the planet.”

Among other keys speakers were: Pasi Hellman: Consul General of Finland in Shanghai representative from Finland, Helen Mountford: Vice President for Climate and Economics WRI, Juan Ignacio Garcia de Motiloa: National Vice Chair of Energy Working Group, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, Peng Peng: Secretary – General , China New Energy Investment and Financing Alliance, Dany Qian: Vice President, JinkoSolar, Tomas Christensen: Climate Ambassador, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities of Denmark a representative from Denmark, Xin Zhhao: CEO, Arctic Green Energy China, Peilong Wang : Vice President Southeast University YRD carbon Neutrality Strategy Development Institute.

The Director, Head of Delegation to UNFCC, Ministry of Environment of Sweden, Mattias Frumeric gave the closing remarks, in his words he reaffirmed that “The Yangtze River Delta and the Nordic countries are actively contributing to the global carbon reduction process. He further stated that from a Swedish perspective, the approach to cooperation with other countries and global climate action is based on three key elements: regulation, framework, finance and innovative technology.”
