ICARE Training Program for Double-degree Master Candidates

(Award Degree of Engineering)

I. Training Objectives

The masters trained by “China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy” shall grasp solid basic theories and systematical specialized knowledge in clean and renewable energy; shall have made relatively deep studies in one specialty direction among solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy, geothermal energy, and energy efficiency; know about current science and technology situation as well as development direction of such field at home and abroad; and know about Chinese and European policies and regulations on energy. They shall possess the ability to independently analyze and solve relevant know-how problems; have a scientific attitude of seeking the truth and being pragmatic as well as good research ethics; be bold in innovation; bears a rigorous style of study; and acquire proficiency in English and can fluently communicate and write in English. They shall also be competent for advanced engineering technology work and management work and have relatively strong abilities to do research, make decisions, make plans and implement.

III. Educational System and Academic Schedule

The Institute implements “flexible educational system on the basis of two years” for the master candidates. EU party’s master educational system is two-year duration, while Chinese party’s is three-year duration. The first academic year is mainly for learning of courses; and the second academic year is mainly for practice and subject researches for thesis, including practice and researches of 6-12 months in units such as companies related to renewable energy, design and research institutions, laboratories in universities and colleges, etc.. Main tasks of each semester are defined as follows:

First Semester

Strengthen training for foreign language; learn general courses; learn basic theoretical courses; determine the supervisor; prepare individual training schedule.

Second Semester

Learn basic specialized courses; consult literature; prepare for practice; prepare for interim report; prepare for topic selection of thesis; determine research subject.

When the second semester is over, outstanding postgraduates will be selected and assigned to study at relevant foreign and domestic universities.

Third Semester

Learn specialized courses; start substantive researches; write the interim report; select a topic for thesis; carry out practice and researches. 40

When the third semester is over, outstanding postgraduates will be selected and assigned to carry out practice at relevant foreign and domestic universities and enterprises.

Fourth Semester

Continue the practice and researches; write the thesis in English; conduct thesis defense.

The thesis shall meet the requirements for thesis specified by Institut des Sciences et Technologies de Paris.

Fifth and Sixth Semester

Continue the practice and researches; write the thesis in Chinese; conduct thesis defense.

The thesis shall meet the requirements for thesis specified by Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

- First academic year: university level general education courses and basic courses (specialized) courses. Second academic year: specialized courses; researches, practice and thesis. Refer to the following table for the training program for double-degree master candidates.

Degree

When 120 European credits are obtained, degree awarded by EU party can be gained.

When more than 36 (including 36) Chinese credits are obtained, degree awarded by Chinese party can be gained.

According to the provisions of double-degree master project of China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (ICARE), to gain double master degrees, in addition to satisfying the credit requirement for master degree of new energy science and engineering which is set up under the discipline of energy power by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, namely the total credits shall be more than or equal to 36 Chinese credits, the obtained credits shall also satisfy the credit requirement for engineering master of clean and renewable energy which is set up under the specialty of science and engineering energy by Institute des Sciences et Technologies de Paris, namely the obtained credits shall be more than or equal to 120 ECTS.

The master candidates who are deficient in specialty foundation of undergraduate level shall be required to take 2 or 3 main undergraduate courses related to the corresponding specialty direction as the make-up courses.
