Huazhong University of Science and Technology - Oxford International Summer Camp opened

On July 4th, 2019, Huazhong University of Science and Technology - Oxford International Summer Camp was officially opened at China-EU Institute for clean and renewable energy. HUST Vice President Prof. Chen Jianguo attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.

On behalf of HUST, Prof. Chen Jianguo expressed his warm welcome to Oxford students. He said that Huazhong University of Science and Technology is one of the key universities of theDouble First-Class" initiative under the Ministry of Education of China. The disciplines are completed, and four of them have entered the A+ category in the fourth round of national assessment. The comprehensive ranking of the university ranks among the top 10 in China, and the global ranking has gradually climbed. HUST has 4 national research platforms and a number of national and provincial research bases. It has established good cooperative relations with more than 200 universities in 37 countries and regions, with more than 3,700 international students from 144 countries and regions.It is located in Wuhan, an important industrial, science and education base and an international comprehensive transportation hub. It is located in the hinterland of China's Optics Valley and has a reputation as a forest university. The history of Sino-British exchanges has a long history, and education cooperation has become an important highlight of Sino-British humanities exchanges. The exchange between the youths of the two countries have injected new vitality into the development of China and Britain, it has further realized the complementary advantages of the two countries and achieved a broader space for cooperation and win-win situation. He hoped that campers can experience local life, learn about Chinese culture, and share their knowledge after returning home. In the end, he expressed his gratitude to the staff and volunteers who prepared the summer camp, and wished the summer camp a great success.

Mr. Aleksy Kwiatkowski, a second-year Oxford student from Southampton, expressed his gratitude to the staff and volunteers who prepared the summer camp. He said that renewable energy is one of the necessary conditions for the sustainable development of the world. He hoped to make positive contributions to the wonderful research of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and he is full of expectations for the upcoming summer camp.

Ms. Li Siqin, a ICARE class 2018 student, expressed her welcome to the campers as a volunteer representative. She briefly introduced Chinese culture, explained the weather conditions, geographical location and cultural background of Wuhan city, and explained the follow-up summer camp arrangement with class 2018 student Ms. Xiao Run.

Mr. Yi Hui, ICARE deputy dean said that the “Huazhong University of Science and Technology – Oxford University” summer camp project was jointly launched by ICARE and Oxford University Employment Center, it was first hosted in July 2013. ICARE is the organizer. In the past seven years, 130 Oxford students have applied for and 56 students have actually participated in the project, all of which have been funded by Oxford University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Most of the campers are from UK, Germany, Poland and Romania, covering the education phase from undergraduate to doctoral. Their majors include physics, biology, engineering, materials science, chemistry, mathematics, geology, philosophy, etc. The summer camp project has received great attention of HUST leaders. It has been supported by the school of International Education, the International Exchange center and other relevant departments. It has gradually become a brand, and in April 2019, it won the summer camp gold medal issued by Oxford University.

Ms.Chen Jie, deputy director of HUST International Exchange center, Ms.Zhao Xiaofeng, deputy dean of the School of International Education, Yin Hongyun, director of HUST International Exchange Office of the Graduate School, Ms.Wan Tian, regional Manager of HUST International Exchange center, Mr.Yin Xinlin, project officer of the School of International Education, Mr.Yi Hui, ICARE deputy dean, Prof. Dimitrios Mathioulakis, foreign expert in ICARE, Prof. Ian Forbes, ICARE flying teacher, Ms. Liu Yang, director of ICARE Education Center, and some teachers and student volunteers attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was hosted by class 2018 student Jiang Congcong.
