The results of the "Significant Academic Advances of Huazhong University of Science and Technology 2024," organized by HUST’s Academic Committee, have recently been announced. Professor Luo Xiaobing's team has been honoured for their research project titled "Design Theory and Application of Slotless Hydro-Electromagnetic Coupled Suspended Micro Pump."
Key contributors: Luo Xiaobing, Hu Run, Xing Guanying, Xue Song, and Han Jiacheng.
Addressing the challenge of bearing wear in liquid-cooled micro-pumps, the team uncovered a suspension principle based on the dynamic pressure flow generated by the rotor's rotation, coupled with the motor’s electromagnetic force. This led to the invention of a slotless hydro-magnetic coupled levitation micro-pump capable of operating at speeds over 20,000 RPM, extending its service life to up to 20 years.
The team developed theoretical models for thin liquid film flow and momentum transfer within the micro-pump, as well as transient electromagnetic force models, enabling precise solutions to the hydraulic and electromagnetic forces on the rotor. Additionally, they created a nonlinear kinematic model of the rotor within a fluid, revealing the suspension mechanism under multi-physics coupling. This allows for precise balancing of hydraulic forces, time-varying electromagnetic forces, gravity, and unbalanced loads on the rotor, supporting scalable design and product transformation.
