The Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics recently announced the winners of its 2024 Science and Technology Awards. Professor Luo Xiaobing’s project, "Key Technologies and Engineering Applications for Slotless Liquid-Electromagnetic Coupled Levitation Micro Pump," was honored with the First-Class Prize for Technological Invention.
The project addresses the issue of bearing wear in liquid cooling micro-pumps by leveraging a novel levitation principle that combines hydrodynamic fluid forces and motor-generated electromagnetic forces. The team invented a slotless liquid-electromagnetic coupled levitation micro-pump capable of operating at over 20,000 RPM with a lifespan of up to 20 years. They also developed precise models for fluid dynamics, electromagnetic force, and rotor mechanics, culminating in the design of advanced products.
Founded in 1978, the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics is a leading academic organization promoting innovation in energy and power fields. Its awards recognize achievements in scientific research and technological development, encouraging the integration of innovation with economic and social progress.
