Source: Release:2025-03-06 08:37:03 Writer: Hits:8

Since 2010, ICARE has been actively fostering international exchange and cooperation. More than 300 outstanding students have embarked on exciting overseas study and internship experiences at renowned institutions, while ICARE has also welcomed 187international students for exchange programs. These opportunities have strengthened collaboration between Chinese and international students in scientific research and cultural exchange, closely aligning with the national "Dual Carbon" strategy and contributing to the development of top-tier engineers in the new energy sector.

To refine its international talent cultivation model, ICARE has brought together an exceptional team of Chinese and international mentors, creating a multidisciplinary, cross-training system that blends Chinese expertise with global perspectives. Over time, this initiative has expanded into a comprehensive international talent network, paving the way for students to thrive in a globalized world.

For 2024, as our students embark on overseas internships, we are excited to share their inspiring stories—offering a glimpse into their experiences, discoveries, and growth while interning at prestigious institutions around the world. Join us in celebrating their achievements!

A Year in France – Learning, Living, and Growing

By ZHONG Wenbo

Spending a year in France was an unforgettable experience that enriched me both academically and personally. Beyond the classroom, I explored countless museums, navigated daily life independently, and adapted to new work and social environments. Along the way, I made wonderful friends and built strong connections with them.

-          Academic Journey

During my first six months of coursework, I studied topics such as thermodynamic system modeling, electricity cost analysis, energy efficiency in buildings, industries, and transportation, as well as energy systems integrating renewables and storage. Compared to energy programs in China, courses in France place a stronger emphasis on energy efficiency and system optimization, while still covering new energy generation.

One major difference I noticed was in assessments. Instead of relying heavily on exams, most courses concluded with project work, guided by teaching assistants or professors. .

-          Beyond the Classroom

Outside of our studies, my classmates and I enjoyed lively discussions over group projects and social gatherings. A highlight was celebrating a friend’s birthday with a cozy dinner—a reminder that friendships formed during our studies are just as valuable as academic achievements.

Exploring Paris was another exciting part of my journey. I visited world-famous museums, including the Louvre, where I admired masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Traveling beyond France, I also had the chance to visit historic sites such as the Waterloo Battlefield, where Napoleon met his fate.

One particularly meaningful visit was to the Memorial of Chinese Students in France, located in Montargis. Learning about the challenges and perseverance of revolutionary pioneers who studied and worked there was truly inspiring.

-          Internship Experience

The second half of my year was dedicated to a research internship at a leading research center. Under my professor’s guidance, I used the Modelica programming language to test a new multi-stage compression cooling solution aimed at improving refrigeration energy efficiency. It was incredibly rewarding to apply theoretical knowledge to a real-world project and see the impact of my work.

This year abroad was a transformative chapter of my life—one filled with academic insights, personal growth, and lifelong memories.

A Year at Mines Paris - PSL – A Deep Dive into Energy and Innovation

By MENG Longbo

Last September, I had the incredible opportunity to study at Mines Paris - PSL, one of the world’s leading engineering schools. From the very start, I was deeply impressed by the quality of teaching, the expertise of the faculty, and the emphasis on practical learning.

-          Diving into Energy Studies

At Mines Paris - PSL, I took courses such as Energy System Optimization and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). These classes combined strong theoretical foundations with hands-on training, including site visits, case studies, and real-world project exercises. This approach not only deepened my understanding of the energy sector but also sharpened my analytical and problem-solving skills.

-          Internship at the National Research Institute for Agriculture

After six months of coursework, I secured an internship at France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment. My project focused on developing a decarbonization roadmap for the dairy processing industry, evaluating energy consumption, carbon emissions, and potential decarbonization technologies.

Throughout this internship, I did the following :

- Analyzed energy use and carbon emissions in dairy processing
- Assessed the feasibility of various decarbonization solutions
- Developed an implementation plan for sustainable practices
- Prepared a final report and presentation

This hands-on experience gave me a profound understanding of energy and environmental assessment in an industrial context, which will be invaluable for my future career.

-          Looking Ahead

Reflecting on this incredible year, I am grateful not only for the knowledge I gained but also for the skills I developed—independent thinking, teamwork, and adaptability. My internship allowed me to apply my studies in a real-world setting, further strengthening my expertise in energy transition. Moving forward, I am excited to continue working toward a sustainable and carbon-neutral future!

A Summer in Greece – Research, Exploration, and Cultural Insights

By ZHANG Lingfei

From July to September 2024, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in a short-term study program in Greece at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Representing ICARE in this exchange was both an honor and a thrilling experience.

-          First Impressions of Greece

Arriving in Athens, I was warmly welcomed by Professor Petros, who helped me settle in. I quickly got used to the Mediterranean cuisine—healthy, fresh, and always accompanied by a slice of lemon! My first meeting with my research supervisor, Professor Tryfonas, was quite amusing. Mistaking him for a student, I asked who his professor was—only to find out he was his own advisor!

-          Exciting Research Work

My research focused on advanced waste utilization and carbon reduction technologies. I worked on building a life cycle carbon emissions model for municipal solid waste processing, using Simapro software for analysis. Despite the intensity of the work, I found it incredibly fulfilling.

-          Discovering Greece and International Friendships

Beyond the lab, I took full advantage of my time in Greece. I visited breathtaking islands like Santorini and Zakynthos, experiencing the stunning blue seas and picturesque landscapes that make Greece feel like paradise.

Another highlight was meeting students from all over the world—Poland, Colombia, Argentina, Italy, and beyond. We exchanged ideas, cultures, and career perspectives. I found it fascinating that many of my international friends preferred entrepreneurial paths or global companies, whereas back home, many of my peers aim for stable government or corporate jobs.

-          A Summer of Growth

Though my time in Greece was short, it was filled with meaningful experiences. I gained valuable research skills, broadened my horizons, and made wonderful friendships. This journey has inspired me to continue seeking global opportunities and constantly challenge myself. I truly hope to embark on more international experiences in the future!
