During his three years of research life, Mr. He Shangyang admits that he didn’t adapt to the heavy coursework in ICARE at first, but he actively communicated with his supervisor and sought appropriate help from him. To make progress in scientific research, he sacrificed a lot of free time on weekends, browsed a lot of literature in the office, and repeatedly conducted experiments. With his excellent performance in both academics and research, he was able to obtain a Ph.D. admission to his preferred university.
In terms of scientific research, Mr. He Shangyang said that the road to scientific research is not always smooth, there will be a lot of experimental failures, and even some negative comments. No matter how unsuccessful the experiments are, before entering the lab again, you should cheer yourself up and believe that you will be able to get satisfactory data this time. Working in front of a computer for a long time can cause great harm to the body, and scientific research also needs the support of good physical quality, and active exercise can also help us release stress.
In addition to his research studies, Mr. He also actively participated in the work of ICARE and the activities of the society. During the first year of his studies, he was the head of the publicity department of the Graduate Student Association of ICARE, and he checked every student news tweet published by ICARE, and often took the responsibility of photographing and writing articles for student activities. He also served as the leader of the first and second party groups of the ICARE 2002 Party Branch, where he completed all the tasks issued by the higher party organization on time and got along well with the students in the group. During the epidemic, Mr. He Shangyang actively participated in volunteer work to serve his classmates and his sense of responsibility as a member of the Communist Party. He said that he felt very happy in the process of serving everyone, and it was a good feeling to be trusted and needed.
Looking back on his entire graduate career, Mr. He Shangyang is full of gratitude. The first thing he would like to thank is his supervisor. He said that his supervisor has provided him with great help in both research and life. When he first came into contact with scientific research, his supervisor patiently provided him with a high-quality, reasonable, practical research direction and technical guidance. His supervisor also took him through the whole process of writing, revising and submitting his thesis, and could be said to be his guide and guiding light on the road of research. His supervisor's concern for him was not only for his scientific research but also for his future development. During the process of writing his dissertation, his supervisor would often recommend him to teachers and students in the same field for in-depth communication and become research collaborators, trying to push him to a broader research platform.
Thanks to the all-English teaching background at ICARE, Mr. He Shangyang's English has improved rapidly, especially in spoken English, and he is no longer timid to communicate with people in English. He said that ICARE provides students with an international perspective, which directly influenced his decision to pursue his Ph.D. in Hong Kong. The project-based approach to teaching and research has improved both collaboration and problem-solving skills. ICARE also offers a lot of opportunities to study abroad, giving ICARE students a chance to encounter different cultures, which is a rare thing. ICARE can bring together students from different disciplines and research directions so that they can communicate with each other in-depth and draw inspiration from the collision of ideas.
He also wants to thank HUST for providing a good learning environment and platform. In three years, Mr. He Shangyang met many friends, which is always a valuable asset in his life. He said that he will carry this gratitude with him in the future and continue to become a useful person to society and the motherland.
