On the morning of June 27, the opening ceremony of the 2024 "Huazhong University of Science and Technology - University of Oxford" Summer Research Internship Program took place at HUST. Zhan Yiqing, Vice President of HUST, was in attendance.
On behalf of HUST, Zhan Yiqing warmly welcomed the Oxford students participating in the program. She highlighted that since its inception in 2013, nearly 100 Oxford students have engaged in scientific research at HUST. The program has received widespread recognition and praise from both institutions, with the trust and collaboration between the two universities continuing to strengthen. This program has evolved into a significant academic and cultural exchange platform between HUST and the University of Oxford, fostering broader connections between China and the UK. She expressed hope that during this summer camp, the Oxford students would collaborate closely with HUST's leading research teams, deepen exchanges and cooperation, and actively serve as ambassadors of friendship, not only between the two universities but also between the two nations.
ICARE Professor Yang Jun, representing the program mentors, emphasized that clean and sustainable energy supply is a global concern. He stressed the importance of exploring the potential of various energy sources, such as fossil fuels, hydropower, solar energy, wind energy, biomass, geothermal energy, and nuclear energy, to collectively build a new energy structure. He likened the global energy landscape to a social system, where different energy types both compete and cooperate. Professor Yang encouraged the students to approach the summer research program with an open, free, and adventurous mindset to foster growth and progress.
Ned Chapman, representing Oxford University students, expressed his gratitude to HUST for providing this research internship opportunity. He shared with the audience some of the key issues he was exploring in his research, such as how humanity should respond to the development of artificial intelligence and the necessary legislative regulations to accompany its growth. Ned also outlined his primary goals and expectations for the program, expressing his eagerness to achieve them through reading, critical thinking, debating, writing, and hands-on practice during the summer research internship.Bas du formulaire
Recently, the program was once again honored with the Gold Standard Internship Host for Oxford University's Summer Internship Program. This year, the six-week program has expanded its research fields beyond the original science and engineering disciplines to include humanities and social sciences for the first time. Oxford students will engage in academic research at ICARE, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, the School of Telecommunications and Information Engineering, the School of Law, the School of Public Administration, and the School of Economics.
Earlier, HUST rigorously selected 28 students from over 100 Oxford applicants to participate in the program. HUST is committed to strengthening its connections and cooperation with world-renowned universities, aiming to attract more high-caliber international students through quality programs such as the "World-Renowned Universities Research Internship Program for International Students in China." These efforts will enhance HUST's appeal to outstanding students worldwide and contribute to its goal of building world-class universities and first-rate academic disciplines.
Leaders from the International Education School, International Exchange Office, ICARE, School of Public Administration, School of Economics, the Human Rights Law Research Institute, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, along with project-responsible professors and student volunteers from various departments and schools, attended the opening ceremony. Twenty-eight undergraduate students from Oxford University also participated.
