In August 2024, ICARE students embarked on a remarkable journey to the United Nations Conference Centre in Thailand to participate in the 12th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS). Alongside young leaders from around the globe, they engaged in discussions about the world’s future direction and collaboratively envisioned a new blueprint for humanity.

Lecture Sessions

Over 500 university students from all continents gathered at the conference, where they explored international governance issues and innovative solutions through speeches by prominent global leaders. This experience not only allowed delegates to build a worldwide network but also significantly enhanced their leadership, cross-cultural communication, and creative thinking skills.

  1. "Rising Together: Uniting for a World in      Need"
This is more than just a slogan—it's a heartfelt call to action, uniting      global youth leaders to address pressing challenges. Together with David      James Begbie, participants explored how the power of unity among these      young leaders can inspire and shape solutions for global crises,      contributing their strength to a world in need.

  2. "The Elephant Whisperer"
Led by Sangduen Lek Chailert, known as the "Elephant Whisperer"      from Thailand's Elephant Conservation Center, participants embarked on a      journey through the tropical jungle, experiencing a profound connection      with these majestic creatures. This spiritual journey prompted deep      reflection on the relationship between humanity and nature.

  3. "Leveraging Migration for Sustainable      Development"
Migration, often seen as a complex and sensitive issue, was reexamined      through a fresh perspective. Joanna Dabao, Head of Policy and Programme      Support at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), discussed      how effective management of migration flows can foster global sustainable      development. She encouraged the audience to think critically about how to      create a more inclusive and harmonious society in an increasingly      globalized world.

In addition to these key topics, students delved into critical global issues like environmental protection, examining the fragility of natural ecosystems and strategies to preserve them. They also explored health and wellness challenges, emphasizing the need for a robust global health system. Humanitarian aid was another focal point, with delegates sharing stories of love and hope that transcend national boundaries. Each discussion underscored the participants' commitment to safeguarding our shared planet and motivated them to take bold steps in their fields of expertise.

A Memorable Interaction: ICARE Students with Shomy Chowdhury

ICARE students had the opportunity to meet Shomy Chowdhury, co-founder of AWARENESS 360. Chowdhury’s personal loss, the death of her mother from severe diarrhea in 2014, spurred her into action, raising awareness about clean water and sanitation. Along with her partner, Arefin, she founded Awareness 360, a non-governmental organization in Kuala Lumpur that unites young people to improve lives. Today, the organization has 1,500 volunteers across 23 countries, and their initiatives, such as hygiene workshops and water filtration methods, have reached 150,000 people. Their work has garnered recognition from the United Nations Development Programme and other international bodies.

Give Back Day

On the third day of the summit, participants were given four options for volunteer activities: “Gentle Giants Refuge,” “Safe Passage,” “Brushes of Hope,” and “Greening our Coastlines.” ICARE students chose “Safe Passage” and traveled to Ban Huai Nam Khao School, located near the Thai-Myanmar border—a school established for refugees.

Alongside delegates from various countries, ICARE students were warmly welcomed by the children in the school dining hall. In the classrooms, delegates engaged in heartfelt interactions, guiding the children in completing crafts and proudly displaying their creations. Yu Yang, an ICARE student, reflected, “We expected to enter a dilapidated slum, but instead, we experienced the warmth and beauty of humanity here.”

Through this experience, ICARE students not only broadened their global perspectives but also fulfilled their social responsibilities through tangible actions. Their interactions with the refugee children deepened their empathy and compassion, making this experience not just an exchange of knowledge but also a profound spiritual journey. It inspired the students to continue contributing to the world’s betterment as they move forward.

A Call to Action

In today’s deeply interconnected world, the growth of the younger generation requires not only academic knowledge but also an understanding of global issues and a strong sense of responsibility. As emphasized at the USLS, only through solidarity and cooperation can we drive sustainable global development. The power of this generation of young leaders will undoubtedly be a crucial force in shaping the world’s future.
