The 3rd Huazhong University of Science and Technology “Wuhan Tianyuan Cup” Postgraduate Innovation and Creativity Competition for Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality was successfully held.

On the afternoon of September 4, 2026, the 3rd HUST “Wuhan Tianyuan Cup” Postgraduate Innovation and Creativity Competition on Dual Carbon Goals was held in Room N102 of the Clean Energy Building.

Hosted by the Postgraduate Affairs Office of the Student Affairs Department of the Party Committee, the competition was co-organized by the China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, with Wuhan Tianyuan Group Co., Ltd. serving as the title sponsor.

Centered on the theme of “Exploring Dual Carbon Pathways, Inspiring Innovative Thinking”, the competition encouraged postgraduate students to develop creative and innovative ideas in fields including new energy, energy storage, low-carbon technologies, energy conservation and emission reduction, carbon capture, and carbon markets.

 

Participating projects brought together cutting-edge disciplines such as environmental and new energy technologies, advanced materials, and electronic information technologies to produce work with social significance and industrial value, while identifying forward-looking and exploratory innovation initiatives that bridge technology and industry.

 

Mr. Wu Deming, Director of the Water Research Institute of Wuhan Tianyuan Group Co., Ltd., Mr. Yang Lin, Director of the General Affairs Office of Wuhan Tianyuan Group Co., Ltd., Ms. Zhou Yaqi, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Mr. Sun Lu, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Energy and Power Engineering, Ms. Liang Yuanyuan, Head of the Affairs Management Section, Postgraduate Work Office, Student Affairs Department of the University Party Committee, together with faculty jury members from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, attended the event.

 

Zhou Yaqi delivered the opening address. She stressed that the Dual Carbon Goals represent a major strategic decision made by the CPC Central Committee from the perspective of advancing harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. By providing a university-enterprise cooperation platform and a competitive arena for innovation, the competition is designed to guide postgraduate students in conducting innovative research at disciplinary frontiers while addressing real-world industrial challenges. Students are expected to shoulder the mission of protecting lucid waters and lush mountains and advancing green development, thereby demonstrating their academic value in serving national strategic priorities.

 

Liang Yuanyuan extended her best wishes for the competition and expressed her expectations for its success. She warmly welcomed the participating faculty, students and guests, and expressed gratitude to Wuhan Tianyuan Group for its generous sponsorship, as well as to the schools and staff involved for their hard work. She reviewed the outstanding achievements the university has attained in this competition over the past three years, wished the event every success, and encouraged contestants to reach new heights and make further breakthroughs.

 

Wu Deming thanked the faculty, student participants, judges and staff for their support for the competition and wished the participants success and further breakthroughs. Explaining the company’s motivation for sponsorship, he noted that, as a leading enterprise in comprehensive environmental governance, Tianyuan Group aims to inspire more young talent to commit to the dual carbon cause through diverse forms of university-enterprise cooperation and to contribute to the national green development strategy.

 

The university-level competition consisted of two stages: preliminary document review and final defense. Following a rigorous preliminary round, a total of 16 teams from various schools across the university qualified for the final.

 

During the defense session, contestants took turns presenting their innovative achievements in new energy, energy storage, low-carbon technologies, energy conservation and emission reduction to the expert judges. The evaluation panel scored each project and provided guidance based on its originality, application prospects and presentation quality, helping teams further refine their work and providing valuable advice to those eligible for the national competition.

After intense competition, one first prize, three second prizes and six third prizes were awarded.

 

The successful holding of the competition not only stimulated postgraduates’ awareness of innovation and improved their innovative and practical capabilities, but also provided a platform for in-depth industry-university-research integration between the university and society. It promotes efficient, green development and contributes to achieving the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
